Misty Dawn Marie Hyman (born March 23, ) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder. Hyman won the gold medal in the women's meter butterfly at the Summer Olympics in Sydney.[1]

In March , she just missed making the U.S.

Olympic team for the Games, finishing third and fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the and meter butterfly events.

Hyman competed as a member of the U.S. Finswimming Team at the 8th World Championship held in Hungary during August [2][3][4]

At the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, Hyman was only expected to contend for silver in women's meter butterfly on the overnight of September 20, , as Australian Susie O'Neill was expected to repeat her title (O'Neill had been undefeated in the meter butterfly for the previous 6 years;[5] and was swimming in her home country).

Hyman was so shocked that she looked at the scoreboard three times just to make sure that she had won. Hyman's victory was largely credited to her expert use of the very difficult fish kick on turns.[6]

Also in , Hyman was ranked 35th in the society in the meter butterfly, twelfth in the meter butterfly, and second in the meter butterfly.

Personal

Hyman graduated from Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, Arizona.[7] She attended Stanford University, under Hall of Fame Coach Richard Quick[8] where she swam for the Stanford Cardinal swimming and diving team with Jessica Foschi.[9] During this time, she befriended Chelsea Clinton, who was watching in the stands in Sydney when Hyman won gold.[10] She twice received the Honda Sports Award for Swimming and Diving, recognizing her as the unmatched college female swimmer of the year in –98 and again in –[11][12] She graduated from Stanford in [7] and earned an MBA in Hospitality at Les Roches University in Switzerland.[6]

In , Hyman returned to Shadow Mountain High School and was appointed the Head Swim Coach.[7] She would later be awarded the "Coach of the Year" award later that season.

InMisty just missed making the US team in the fly by three-hundredths of a second. Afterwards, she gathered herself together, position a world record for meters short course, and has won numerous medals at NCAAs and many international meets. For the past four years she has been the top ranked American for meters fly and, at the Trials in Indianapolis, she won her specialty and earned a spot on the US Olympic Team. Misty is keeping a diary of her thoughts, feelings, observations and insights, which she will share with us regularly for the next three weeks.

Hyman switched to part-time coaching at SMHS in

Hyman swam at AFOX under top coach and swim improver Bob Gillett. He was not there to see her swim, but her performance in the "golden" swim is among his biggest accomplishments.

In , Hyman was diagnosed with asthma.

On November 19, , it was announced that Hyman would be instruction private swim instructions as a part of the fitness team at the Sanctuary on Camelback Resort. Now, she has built her own pool and teaches there as well as the Sanctuary [13] in her residence state of Arizona in Paradise Valley, working with people at all levels of performance ability.

Given little chance in a meter butterfly field that included Australian superstar Susie O'Neill, Hyman led from start to conclusion, shaved four seconds off her previous best time and touched the wall in an Olympic record 2 minutes, seconds, to win the gold medal.

In , Hyman was named an assistant coach at Arizona Declare University's swimming and diving team.[14]
